Why did I gain 4 pounds overnight?

"Food eaten at night is more often stored as fat because we tend to be less active, so we increase fat storage at that time, especially depending on the composition of the food you ate later in the evening," says Dr. Covington. Carbs, specifically, if not burned, are then stored as fat, she adds.

You step on the scale one morning and you’re totally on track. The next morning, you’re up five pounds. WTF. Is overnight weight gain a thing?

It’s a confusing experience that happens to many people trying to lose weight. But you didn’t actually gain five pounds of fat in a single day. After all, gaining a single pound of fat requires consuming about 3,500 calories more than you can burn off. So to gain five pounds in a day, you’d have to eat nearly 20,000 calories in just 24 hours. But gaining five pounds of water weight in a day? That’s easy, says Georgie Fear, RD, CSSD, author of "It’s important to know that your weight will fluctuate on a daily basis, but it doesn’t mean that your weight-loss strategy is failing." Before you worry over a higher-than-normal scale number, know that it's pretty common to have those days, says New York-based registered dietitian Jessica Cording, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. If you did one of a number of different things the day or night before “it’s not unusual to notice an increase in your weight of a few ounces or pounds,” Cording says. Again, Cording chalks most of this up to water weight. But, she says, “if you notice your weight continuing to trend upwards over time, this could indicate actual weight gain.”

How much can your weight fluctuate in one night?

FWIW: There’s nothing that happens in your body overnight that magically makes you gain weight, says Sonya Angelone, RD, spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Your metabolism doesn’t stop, so you gain or lose ‘weight’ any time,” she says. That’s also true if you happen to eat more than usual on any given day—your body won’t suddenly make you gain weight overnight. “With a higher calorie day or two, metabolism increases to compensate, so fat won’t be immediately made and stored,” Angelone explains. “The opposite is true as well. If you under eat for a couple days, your metabolism will slow to compensate before losing weight.” So there’s really no hard-and-fast number, Angelone says. (Sorry!). But, “Your weight can change a couple pounds depending on your starting weight,” she adds. If you want to get really technical, she says that a 0.5 percent weight gain can happen, but it shouldn’t be any more than that. If it is and the weight has staying power, she recommends checking your scale and calling your doctor. But experts assure that a lot of overnight weight gain can be explained pretty easily. Consider these 12 factors that may make it seem as if you gained weight overnight.

Can you poop a pound of weight?

The average poop weighs around 1/4 pound to 1 pound. Larger people who eat and drink more, or people who have less-regular bowel movements, have heavier poops. It takes an average of 33 hours for food to be processed into poop and pass out of your body.

Pooping is simple: When you do it, you’re getting rid of food that was in your body. Is that why we feel lighter after doing our business? Are we actually losing weight? It turns out, yes.

The weight of your poop varies. It depends on several factors:

body size

eating habits

how much water you drink

bowel movement regularity

The average poop weighs around 1/4 pound to 1 pound.

Larger people who eat and drink more, or people who have less-regular bowel movements, have heavier poops. It takes an average of 33 hours for food to be processed into poop and pass out of your body. If we only lose a little bit of weight when we poop, why do we feel so much slimmer finally pooping after being constipated or after a large meal? It’s because pooping reduces gas and bloating. This generally helps you feel more comfortable.

Poop is made mostly of water, but also contains:

dead and living bacteria

protein

undigested food (fiber)

waste material

salt

fat

The longer poop stays in the intestines, the drier and heavier it will become. While most people poop once a day, it’s considered normal to poop as frequently as three times a day or as little as once every three days. Having very frequent, loose watery stools is considered diarrhea. Diarrhea is usually caused by bacterial infections or stress and lasts several days. It can become dangerous when it lasts for weeks or more because it encourages water loss in the body. People with diarrhea can lose a lot of weight if they’ve been sick for a while, but they’re losing mostly water weight.
