A warning has been issued by a Melbourne doctor after a packet of 'weight-loss' noodles blocked his patient's stomach for ten days. The deterrence comes as leading emergency physician Dr Michael Ben-Meir spoke out after he saw a case involving a 61-year-old woman who experienced prolonged pain and vomiting. The symptoms, hallmarked by an inability to eat, came after she ate a whole packet of the Japanese 'konjac' noodles on an empty stomach. Dr Ben-Meir, Director of Cabrini Health in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, told the Stonnington Leader that the woman's reaction to the noodles resulted in her stomach expanding several times its usual size. 'The noodles were like cellulose, they hadn't broken down and they had completely blocked her stomach,' he told the publication. 'Her stomach had gotten bigger and bigger, it was between five and seven times bigger than what it should have been.' Dr Michael Ben-Meir (pictured) said his patient's stomach swelled to 'five to seven' times its normal size Konjac noodles are translucent and gelatin-based and have exploded in popularity due to their apparent capabilities for weight-loss. The sustenance is known for its very-low carbohydrate count as well as being largely made up of dietary fibre - a component ironically supposed to aid proper digestion. After Dr Ben-Meir saw the patient he referred the case to the Department of Health who insisted it was an isolated incident. Despite their rising popularity and ability to suppress appetite, konjac noodles have been responsible for at least one death in Australia since their initial release.
