Why am I skinny in the morning and fat at night?

Did you ever look at yourself in the mirror first thing in the morning and noticed that you look slimmer? Your bagong gising eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, CGs! According to a study done by Live Strong, “Not only do you look slimmer in the morning, but you actually weigh less, too.” While good night’s sleep alone isn’t enough to make you lose major pounds, you do burn calories while you sleep.

1. Burn, baby, burn

“When we sleep at night, our body enters a fasting period,” said Dr. Maria Alexandra C. Villapol, MD, DPCP, an Internal Adult Medicine Specialist. “Basically, we stop loading calories for least eight hours, and our body metabolizes everything that we put in throughout the previous day.” You may think that you aren’t expending any energy while you sleep, but in reality, the food and drinks you had the day before are broken down and eliminated through bodily processes such as respiration, perspiration, and urination. “When we have used up what is needed, the rest is either stored as additional fat, or prepared for elimination as waste,” Dr. Villapol added.

2. Fluid retention

In a study by Dr. Walter Moraes of Universidad Federal Sao Paolo, as reported in Psychology Today, their subjects lost weight three times as fast while asleep than while lying in bed awake. The 14 men aged 21-30 remained in bed for eight hours straight and did not urinate or defecate during their sleep. According to Live Strong, 80 percent of weight loss during sleep is from water, and this does not include urine or feces.

3. Bathroom trips

How many times do you get up in the middle of the night to pee in the bathroom? The National Sleep Foundation said that relieving yourself in the toilet once per night is considered normal, while two or more events per night may be associated with daytime tiredness. Either way, emptying a full bladder—and, not to mention, doing number two first thing in the morning—contributes to a lighter weight and less bloated feeling.

4. Salt intake

If your consumption of salty treats made your tummy bloat, trust that this temporary stomach expansion will disappear the next morning. “Sleep gives the body an opportunity to balance itself, causing much of the water retained to be processed and eliminated.” [via Live Strong]. The more we consume sodium, the more our body conserves water to maintain the right balance of our cells. “When we increase our water intake, this promotes better elimination of the excess salt,” Dr. Villapol added. “Losing the weight of water retention by morning really depends on whether your water intake was enough to flush out the excess salt.” But be warned, CGs! This doesn’t mean that you should abuse your salt intake, as it may lead to hypertension, one of the most common causes of kidney damage. The best time to measure our weight and size is in the morning, or as doctors and nutritionists refer to it—our baseline measurement. “This eliminates some of the variability on measurements brought about by our food and fluid intake, and the level of activity we did the previous day,” said Dr. Villapol. Most fashion and fitness magazines prefer doing their photo shoots in the morning, not only because the golden hour (the first hour of light right after sunrise) gives the best natural lighting, but also because models look their slimmest in the morning.
