Age spots, liver spots, freckles, sun spots, pregnancy mask, are all types of hyperpigmentation, and there are several treatments available to reduce or remove the darker skin. Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of skin with an excess of melanin production forms deposits, causing skin patches that appear darker than the surrounding skin.

How melanin affects hyperpigmentation?

Melanin is a pigment produced in the skin of almost all animals on Earth. Melanin is a natural substance in the body that gives the iris of the eye, hair, and skin it's color; melanin is essentially color. Melanin also acts as a kind of natural sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays; however, it cannot prevent sunburn all on its own, as many people of color have found this out the hard way (ouch).

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Common causes of skin hyperpigmentation include:

Sun exposure - This is one of the reasons that it affects people of color more because most don't use sunscreen and the opportunity of hyperpigmentation from UV is higher.

Heredity - Yes, you can get it from "your mama and dem".

Acne and Hormonal Changes - Teens and pregnant women have outbreaks of hyperpigmentation due to hormonal changes that cause acne as well.

Make sure to use a Sunscreen

Avoid exposure to the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect the skin and stop hyperpigmentation from becoming darker. A key point to note is that darker skin-tones are just as prone to sun damage as their lighter counterparts. That's why wearing a strong SPF (Sun Protection Factor) daily - to protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays - is paramount for fighting pigmentation.
