Interaction Between Supplements

Potassium supplements can interfere with the absorption of vitamin B-12, resulting in a deficiency. Since your liver stores enough vitamin B-12 to last about three years, it could take a while to see any signs of a deficiency. Early symptoms include numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, poor balance, loss of appetite and forgetfulness. Vitamin B-12 supplements used to treat megaloblastic anemia may cause levels of potassium to drop severely enough to be life-threatening. The amount that's safe to take of either nutrient depends on your personal health status, so consult your health care provider if you have any concerns.

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is essential for red blood cells to develop normally. As a coenzyme, it has to attach to enzymes before they’re able to activate the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids. Vitamin B-12 also converts the amino acid homocysteine into methionine, which then becomes S-adenosylmethionine, or SAMe. Converting homocysteine serves two purposes: It gets homocysteine out of your blood, which may lower your risk of developing heart disease, and SAMe is needed for a variety of functions, including making neurotransmitters that regulate mood. You need to consume 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B-12 daily.

Potassium offsets the negative effects of sodium in your diet by lowering blood pressure. It's also an electrolyte, which means it carries an electrical charge. In that role, potassium helps stimulate nerve impulses and muscle contractions, and has a role regulating your heart beat. To maintain these life-sustaining jobs, your body tightly controls the level of potassium. So much energy is devoted to keeping the right concentration that it is estimated to account for about 20 to 40 percent of the calories burned while you’re at rest. Your recommended daily intake for potassium is 4,700 milligrams.
