Have you spent the last week partying, drowning in alcohol, and rejoicing with sugar and carbs? Well, then now that the New Year has begun in full swing, it’s time to detox and flush out those toxins from your body. An article in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that detox diets may improve the way your liver removes toxins from the body; while a study in the journal Current Gastroenterology Reports reports that a detox diet may help a person lose weight. But how can you detox at home without spending big bucks? Well, here are five drinks that can help your body flush out toxins and allow you to make a fresh start:

1. Water

There is no better way to detox than with good-old water! Water promotes good digestion by dissolving toxins and waste particles in the body and flushing them out through the digestive tract. A study, conducted by the Franz Volhard Clinical Research Center in Germany, found that drinking two liters of water every day causes thermogenesis, which betters digestive health and in turn helps eliminate toxins from the body.

2. Ginger tea

A true-blue winter drink, ginger tea is used in a lot of detox diets because it cleanses the body by stimulating digestion, increases circulation, and causes sweating thus helping in detoxification. A study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine also revealed that ginger can treat a wide range of diseases via immunonutrition and anti-inflammatory responses.

3. Apple-cinnamon water

There is nothing that apples cannot do. Its high phytochemicals and pectin content flush out toxins from the body—especially food additives and trace metals. Cinnamon’s antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties, on the other hand, restore balance in the body and combat free radicals. 4. Mint lemonade

We know what you’re thinking—nimbu pani, in winter? But since both mint and lemon are loaded with benefits and they fight indigestion and toxins effectively—they had to figure on the list. Multiple studies have shown that mint extracts can be used to treat symptoms of indigestion. And since lemons are high in Vitamin C, it aids the immune system by helping the body flush out toxins

5. Cucumber mint detox drink

Mint improves the flow of bile in the stomach when paired with antioxidant-rich cucumber and lemon can help cure toxic overload. Also, cucumbers are high in antioxidants and other nutrients, and thus help protect the body from oxidative stress.

6. Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice is high in Vitamin C and is loaded with punicalagins. This juice has three times the antioxidant activity of red wine and green tea. A Department of Pomology, University of California study found that pomegranate juice accounts for higher antioxidant activity in the body thus helping in detoxification. But if you’re thinking of embracing this tonic, ensure that you only trust freshly-squeezed pomegranate juice and forgo the tetra packs.

How long is it healthy to juice fast?

Consider stopping after three days. Research shows that it is completely safe for healthy people to participate in a juice fast for up to three days and then return to a regular diet.

Juice fasting has many touted benefits that include reducing inflammation, improving sleep, clearing skin, promoting weight loss, ridding the body of toxins, and reducing sugar cravings. But are these juices really worth the hype? Most of these claims are unsubstantiated and anecdotal rather than science-based, but there may be some positives to note from short-term juice fasting. One study1 investigated the effects of a juice fast on health. This study looked at how a three-day fruit and vegetable juice fast affected the gut microbiota, weight loss, and body composition of 20 healthy people. During the fasting period, the subjects drank six 16-ounce bottles of juices that were a mixture of leafy green vegetables, roots, citrus, cayenne, and vanilla almond, totaling around 1,310 calories per day. After the fast, the 20 people could then resume their normal diet for two weeks. The results showed that people lost a significant amount of weight during the juice fast, and that weight loss persisted over the following two weeks (potentially due to changes in their gut microbiota). However, the weight loss may have resulted from lower calorie intake in general rather than from the juice specifically, and beneficial changes in people's gut microbiota may have been due to the overall increase of fruits and vegetables in the diet for those three days. However, this study shows that a juice fast of this composition and calorie count for up to three days is safe and can be somewhat beneficial. But those benefits can't necessarily be fully attributed to the juice itself.
