The most potassium-rich foods are typically fruits and vegetables, but you will also get some potassium from eggs and milk. Meeting your daily potassium intake is important for several functions. Potassium plays a role in fluid balance and acts as an electrolyte, helping to conduct electricity throughout your body for muscle contraction and heart function. Because eggs and milk aren't the best sources of potassium, you should round out your diet with other types of high-potassium foods.

Potassium Intake Recommendations

Potassium is known as a macromineral, meaning you need a large amount of it each day. As an adult of either gender you need 4,700 milligrams per day, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Your recommendation doesn't go up while you're pregnant. If you're breast-feeding however, you'll need 5,100 milligrams per day.

Potassium in Eggs

One large egg has approximately 70 milligrams of potassium. If you're aiming to cut calories and reduce fat from your diet, you can still get potassium from a plain egg white. The white part of a large egg has about 55 milligrams of potassium, accounting for nearly 80 percent of the egg's entire potassium content.

Potassium in Milk

The potassium content in milk depends on which type of milk you prefer. Generally the higher the fat content, the lower the amount of potassium. For example, 8 ounces of whole milk offers slightly more than 320 milligrams of potassium. The same amount of 2-percent milk contains more than 340 milligrams of potassium. If you prefer skim or nonfat milk, you'll get more than 380 milligrams of potassium from an 8-ounce glass. Skim and nonfat milk offer roughly 10 percent more potassium than their whole-milk counterpart.

Boosting Potassium Intake

Lots of other foods have greater amounts of potassium than eggs and milk. Sweet potatoes are among the richest sources of potassium, providing a little more than 925 milligrams from a medium-size sweet potato with the skin. Eggs have been in the news a lot — again. It seems like every few years, questions arise about these meals in a shell. Are they good or bad for you? What about their protein and cholesterol?

Looking at the nutritional breakdown, one egg contains roughly 75 calories, 5 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, 0 carbohydrates, 67 milligrams of potassium, 70 grams of sodium and 210 milligrams of cholesterol. Eggs are also a great source of vitamins A, D and B12, as well as choline, which is a nutrient that's essential in many steps of metabolism. Except for its cholesterol content, one egg is a healthy option for breakfast lunch or dinner. Research shows that the cholesterol in eggs doesn't seem to negatively affect the human body compared to other sources of cholesterol. For example, eggs typically are eaten with other foods high in salt, saturated fat and cholesterol, such as bacon, cheese and butter.
