What is the messiest fruit?

Jackfruit. The last fruit that ranks high in the messiness factor is jackfruit or kathal. Try cutting open a ripe jackfruit and taking out the bulbs yourself and eating them right from there - it's the messiest thing to do. The fruit is viscous, and the skin leaves your hands with a sticky coating of ooze.

Not all foods were meant to be eaten with a fork, knife and spoon - with decent table manners and without spilling anything anywhere. There'll be crumbs, juice, bones and sauces flying everywhere - so you have to just forget about appearing well-mannered if you're going to have them in public. Interestingly, the messier the foods, the tastier they are. And here are 21 of them that will get your mouth watering.

1. Pani Puri

There are no tidbits for this one - you either eat the whole thing in one go, or risk splashing the sides of your mouth and your clothes with the tangy water and the sweet chutney. You know you're a pro if you hardly need a paper napkin after eating a round of these scrumptious snacks.

2. Puff Pastry

Be it the desi patties (as we call them) or the classier croissant, no baked item made with puff pastry has ever been consumed without its crumbs falling all over the place.

3. Pomegranate

Oh it's easy enough if someone peeled them for you and put them in a bowl. But try doing it from scratch yourself. Your fingers will end up sticky - and if you're not careful, you'll probably end up getting sprinkles of that indelible pomegranate juice on your clothes.

4. Watermelon

It is amazing to eat pre-sliced and pre-cubed bits of this juicy fruit during summer. But digging into a whole slice yourself means watermelon juice running down south your face, fingers and probably your clothes.

5. Sugarcane

Ever tried peeling sugarcane with your teeth, and taking bites out of that juicy fiber? You would appreciate sugarcane juice all the more once you've been through that messy ordeal.

6. Mango Pits

Another really messy fruit is the king of them all - mangoes. However, they can still be cut and served in slices or cubes. But there is no way in hell you can relish the mango pit and not get sticky, messy hands and face.

7. Jackfruit

Great taste, but a lot of work goes into it!

8. Crabs

There's no way you can eat a crab dish and not look like a hungry wolf in the process. Getting the tender meat out of those scaly, clawed exterior is a tough job - but once you get to it, it is worth the trouble and embarrassment.

9. Indian Fish Dishes

We Indians do not believe in filets - we'd rather you debone the fish once it's in your plate, cooked and ready for consumption. And hence, eating fish dishes in public can be quite a nuisance - and you can totally forget about using spoons or forks. Want to level up on the messiness challenge? Go for murighonto - the Bengali dish of fish heads cooked with lentils and vegetables.

10. Corn on the Cob

It is simple enough to tear out the roasted corn from the cob - looking like a gnawing goat all the while, but the fun starts when you have to start digging out the kernels from in between your teeth. Let's see who's poised and elegant now!

11. Big burgers

There is only so much that your mouth can open to fit in a burger before your jaw starts hurting. And, let's admit it; burgers today do not really care about the size of mouth to burger height ratio. So basically, you either drop all the fillings on your plate or look like a monster trying to fit the entire thing in your mouth. Your call.

12. Sub

Speaking of junk food, Subway sandwiches also contribute to making us look like uncouth human pigs - especially their meatball subs. The fillings WILL fall, the sauces WILL drip -and you WILL get stuff all over your face unless you keep using the napkin after every bite or two.

13. Noodles

Oh, the usual noodles seem good enough - but when it comes to soupy or pan-fried ones, you're in a lot of trouble. Ramen, Laksa - you name it. The combination of long stringy noodles and juicy gravy/soup together causes a lot of spillage if you're not careful.

14. Cheese Fries

You can have them with forks, of course - just the way you could maybe use a spoon to eat popcorn. Fries are strictly finger food - so when you add melted cheese on top, get ready to end up in sticky, cheesy fingers.

15. Fried Chicken

"Taste ko waste mat karo (Don't waste the taste)" they say - and that means crunching down on them bones with all the greed of a starving dog. So what if there are crumbs all over you and your clothes, and your face and your fingers shiny with grease - you're NOT going to waste that chicken, are you?

16. Mughlai Parantha

© YouTube

One of the best Mughlai dishes destined to get you as messy as possible. These stuffed paranthas will spill out their juicy fillings as soon you break them open - and whoever has heard of eating paranthas with forks and knives? Roll up those sleeves and get to work.

17. Cheese Balls/Puffs

In polite company, it's a shame to waste all that powdery cheesy orange crumbs on your fingers by wiping them on a napkin. Left alone, you'd probably lick them clean, wouldn't you? WOULDN'T YOU?

18. Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk. Apparently.

If what the ads tell us is true, you can only relish a bar of this chocolate when it is slightly hotter than the room temperature - molten enough to make a mess of your fingers, face and self-respect.

19. BBQ Ribs

There is no point flashing the fork and knife around this one - for two reasons. You're never going to get at all the delectable meat with those weapons; and there's no way you'll have enough patience to maneuver the cutlery around the meat while the heavenly BBQ smell titillates your nostrils.

20. Donuts - Powdered Or With Fillings

You're going to get the powdered sugar or the jam/cream filling all over yourself if you are not careful. But let's face it, it is worth it.

21. Cheesy Pizzas

Those cheese-burst pizzas just drip cheese all over the place. And it's hot, it's liquid, and it's unstoppable. The best thing that can happen is you get stains, the worst being blisters!
