While anti-ageing serums and hydrating masks are the first line of defense against ageing, what you're eating is just as important as what you're putting on your skin. Sure, the right skincare products can help turn back the clock to a certain extent, but if you're eating foods that can fast-track the ageing process, you might be rendering it null and void. Here's what you need to know about the foods that might be causing premature fine lines, wrinkles and dryness.

1. Sugar

Sugar is infamous for elevating the AGE process (advanced glycation). “Sugar is well known to cause glycation of collagen, thereby making them easier to degrade and break down. Its one of the fastest ways to age your skin,” states Delhi-based celebrity dermatologist, Dr Kiran Sethi. As AGEs accumulate, they damage the proteins around them too. They make your collagen and elastin stiff, and dry, zapping them of bounce and strength. The effects are seen on your complexion in the form of fine lines, sagging and wrinkles. Ways to know if sugar is affecting your skin? The surface of your skin looks hard and shiny, and deep crevices (around the mouth and eyes) become super evident.

2. Processed foods

Processed meats and processed foods like ready to eat snacks and microwave meals are major skin offenders thanks to their high content of salt and preservatives. “Excess salt, MSG, processed foods and processed meats are loaded with sodium which leads to water retention, which in turn shows up as puffy eyes swollen and inflamed skin,” warns Tahira Kochhar, Delhi-based therapeutic nutritionist.

3. Fried foods

“Deep fried foods and the intake of excess oil and fat in fast foods creates excess oil production within the skin. This shows up in the form of acne, blackheads, blocked pores and breakouts,” explains Kochhar. Foods fried in oil at high temperatures release free radicals that are able to cause cellular damage. Exposure to free radicals causing cross-linking, which affects DNA molecules and can weaken skin's elasticity. Dr Sethi recommends switching olive oil for coconut oil, “Coconut oil can handle high heat, while olive oil will get damaged in cooking, resulting in oxidative damage in your body. Coconut oil is also full of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides), which are great for your heart health and skin health.” Kochhar in fact suggests switching up your cooking oils regularly. “A great tip for nutritive absorption as well as radiant skin is to tap into a different cooking oil every now and then.”

4. Aerated beverages

Caffeine, alcohol and soft drinks are all huge offenders that can make us look older if consumed regularly. “Caffeine and alcohol rob your skin of moisture, they’re dehydrating and can hamper the texture of your skin and its suppleness,” says Kochhar. “Soft drinks contain refined sugar and have a high glycemic index that can make the collagen stiff, ageing it prematurely and causing wrinkles.”

5. Dairy

For a lot of people, milk and other dairy products can cause inflammation in the body, which is a big factor for premature ageing. Dr Sethi explains, “Dairy causes a hormonal imbalance in the system, increasing the IGF1 hormonal cascade which leads to increased ageing of the skin.”

What is the best fruit to prevent diabetes?

Blueberries were most effective in preventing diabetes, followed by grapes and then apples. Bananas and grapefruit were also good. Strawberries did not have much of an effect and cantaloupe slightly increased the risk for type 2 diabetes.

In a study published in the BMJ in July 2013, researchers from Harvard University found that eating whole fruits can reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, but some are more effective than others at warding off the disease. The report used data from three long-running health studies that included 151,209 women and 36,173 men, where participants sent back questionnaires about their lifestyle, diet, and health — specifically any diseases they'd developed — every few years for at least two decades. The researchers asked about 10 fruits: grapes or raisins, peaches, plums or apricots, prunes, bananas, cantaloupe, apples or pears, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, and blueberries. Blueberries were most effective in preventing diabetes, followed by grapes and then apples. Bananas and grapefruit were also good. Strawberries did not have much of an effect and cantaloupe slightly increased the risk for type 2 diabetes.

On the flip side, drinking all kinds of fruit juice, including apple, orange, and grapefruit, was associated with a higher risk of the disease. Replacing three servings of fruit juice each week with blueberries decreased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 33% on average, according to the study. People with type 2 diabetes do not make enough of the hormone insulin, which pulls sugar (glucose) out of the bloodstream and into our cells to be stored and released later. Without enough insulin, bloodsugar hits spikes and troughs. Researchers suggest that blueberries, red grapes, and apples may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes because they contain high levels of anthocyanins, which have been shown to increase glucose uptake in mice with diabetes.
