Bright Eyes – Food for Healthy Eyes: They say that eyes are the window to your soul, they are one of the most engaging features we have. A lot can be said with our eyes, a look can say it all without a word being spoken. Unfortunately, we can’t pick what colour eyes we have. If you weren’t blessed with piercing ice blue eyes or sultry hazel ones, don’t fret, there are things that we can do to make them pop and look like healthy eyes.

Food for Healthy Eyes

We all know that there are foods that improve the health and appearance of our hair, skin and nails, but did you know there are foods that can bring your eyes to life and keep them healthy? Protecting and enhancing our eyes is easier than one might think, just add these foods to your diet and you’ll have everyone convinced that Art Garfunkel was singing about you.

Carrots

Carrots are a no brainer when talking about eyes. We were all told as kids that carrots are good for our eyes and that’s why you never see a rabbit with glasses. Believe it or not, this is not some fairy-tale your Mom told you so you would eat your carrots, they actually do have amazing health benefits for your eyes. They are loaded with Vitamin A that promotes eye health, protects your vision and, how cool is this, strengthens night vision.

Eggs

According to the American Optometric Association eggs are great for our eyes. They are high in lutein (red/yellow pigment) which reduces the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration (vision loss). Although lutein can be found in other foods, it is best absorbed and digested from eggs. In addition, they are a great source of protein and have an abundance of other eggcellent (we couldn’t resist) antioxidants and vitamins.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit are an excellent source of vitamin C which is key for building a strong immune system. Certain citrus fruits such as oranges also contain lutein which, as previously mentioned, can be found in carrots and eggs. This helps the body fight against cataracts and degenerative diseases.

Nuts

There are many types of nuts that are beneficial for eye health, but almonds are particularly good. They are bursting with vitamin E, this helps protect the membrane (wall) of the eye from free radicals such as pollution, cigarette smoke etc.

Leafy Greens

Dark leafy green vegetables are not only great for resisting macular degeneration and cataracts, but they are, calorie for calorie the greatest source of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants you can get. Not only do these help protect the health of your eyes but they will make your eyes sparkle. Not only do all of these foods protect and enhance your eyes, they are also beneficial for your overall health and can be incorporated into healthy eating plans.
