A report issued by the federal government's National Measurement Institute compared the two green concoctions, finally putting an end to the smoothie vs. juice debate. When first comparing the two healthy drinks, researchers found that a green juice actually has more vitamin C, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and potassium compared to a green smoothie, although the latter was found to have more calcium—so they're pretty even so far. Further delving into each drink's nutritional value, researchers found that a green juice contains 142 per cent more vitamin C than the smoothie blend, and was 73 per cent richer in alpha-carotene. It also contained 54 per cent more potassium and provided 83 per cent of the required daily intake of vitamin A. On comparison, experts say the nutrients in a smoothie may be depleted due to the over-processing of the ingredients. Blending also incorporates air into the mix, which can result in belly bloat. To keep a level playing field, researchers made each of the two green drinks with the same ingredients: kale, oranges, celery, carrots and apples.
