What burns faster fat or protein?

Protein and Fat The UCSB website says that the average metabolism rate for both is about 12 hours, but your body first uses the protein. Once all of those calories have been used, you begin to metabolize the fats. Many foods are a combination of food types.

Your body undergoes a long series of steps in order to metabolize a meal. In general, it uses protein before it uses fat. Most foods, however, contain some combination of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and certain people metabolize food at a faster rate than others. In order to determine how quickly you will burn off something you ate, you must look at all of that food’s components and a few variables about yourself.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are metabolized very quickly. Dr. Claudia Gutierrez-Mazzotti, of the University of California at Santa Barbara, says that it only takes your body about two to five hours to use all of the energy and nutrients from fruits, vegetables and starches, and that raw juice can take as little as 15 minutes. That is why snacks such as carrot sticks, fruit and rice cakes offer quick, nutritious, non-fattening energy fixes for busy people. Your body immediately uses the calories, or energy, derived from these foods, and if you are active, you will burn off all of the calories you take in from them.

Protein and Fat

Protein foods, such as meat or beans, are the next things your body metabolizes. The UCSB website says that the average metabolism rate for both is about 12 hours, but your body first uses the protein. Once all of those calories have been used, you begin to metabolize the fats. Many foods are a combination of food types. Cheese, for example, contains protein and fat. If you have cheese and crackers, your body will use the calories from the crackers first. Then it will metabolize the protein from the cheese and, finally, the fat.

Variables

How quickly you metabolize food depends on a few things, all related to your basal metabolic rate. The Mayo Clinic website points out that if you are a muscular person, you will metabolize a meal at a much faster rate than if you had little muscle mass. Your age factors in as well. As people age, they tend to lose muscle mass. Younger people, who tend to have more muscle, generally metabolize food at a faster rate. Men generally have more muscle mass than women and metabolize nutrients more quickly, so gender is also a factor.

Protein and Weight Gain

Some personal trainers suggest loading up on protein to increase fat loss. This can actually cause you to gain weight. If you just barely burn off the carbohydrates that you ate, your body will not have a chance to use all of the protein you have consumed. The excess protein and any fats that you have eaten along with it will be stored as body fat. The healthy approach to weight loss is to consume enough carbohydrates throughout the day to keep you energetic and add a sufficient, not excessive, amount of protein and a minimal amount of fat.
