Should you squeeze the air out of Ziploc bags?

1. Don't do what you usually do. People (myself included) usually try to squeeze the air out of a zip lock bag and then hastily seal it before more air can get in. But air is inevitably left in the bag that can compromise food freshness, and kind of defeats the point of using the zip lock bag in the first place.

Bad news? You've been doing this wrong. Good news? We have the answer. Sorry to have to tell you this, but it seems you've been closing zip lock bags wrong this whole time. Simply zipping it up and trying to squeeze the air out with your hands isn't enough because the air that gets left in the bag takes up space in your fridge and means the food doesn't stay fresh. But closing a zip lock bag the right way is a life hack that will make you wonder how you were so wrong for so long. Here are the potentially life changing instructions on how to seal a zip lock bag, no tools needed.

* 16 ways to save money in the kitchen

* How to give your kitchen a healthy makeover

1. Don't do what you usually do.

People (myself included) usually try to squeeze the air out of a zip lock bag and then hastily seal it before more air can get in. But air is inevitably left in the bag that can compromise food freshness, and kind of defeats the point of using the zip lock bag in the first place. 2. Now simply put your delicious food in the bag and seal it MOST of the way, leaving a small gap. You don't have to worry about pressing the air out. 3. The next step is to put your mouth over the little gap you've left in the top of the bag and, getting intimate with it, suck until you've sucked all the air out of the bag. 4. Voila! You can now enjoy your tightly sealed food and its prolonged freshness.

Slate have created a video of this amazing trick, watch it below.
