Learn More »Whether you love a refreshing glass of lemonade or simply spritz lemon juice on your fish, you’ll get more from lemon juice than tart flavor. Fresh lemon juice is a rich source of citric acid, which may help relieve muscle fatigue and prevent kidney stones. Like other citrus fruits, it’s fat-free, low in calories and is a rich source of vitamin C. It also supplies smaller amounts of potassium, vitamin B6 and folate. Vitamin C Lemons are such rich sources of vitamin C that 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice have 11.8 milligrams, or 13 percent of men’s and 15 percent of women’s recommended daily allowance. Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant that neutralizes molecules known as free radicals. These molecules are the natural byproduct of metabolism. They're also produced in response to environmental stressors, such as cigarette smoke and sunlight. Free radicals cause health problems, such as inflammation and cardiovascular disease, because they mutate and kill healthy cells if they’re not stopped by an antioxidant. Beyond its job as an antioxidant, vitamin C helps produce neurotransmitters and collagen, which support your skin and connective tissues throughout your body. Folate Folate activates enzymes that produce DNA, RNA and amino acids. If you don’t get enough folate, new cells won’t develop properly. While its role in cell growth makes folate vital for preventing birth defects and supporting growth spurts during childhood, it’s essential for maintaining healthy tissues and organs throughout your life. In adults, anemia is a sign of folate deficiency due to improper growth of red blood cells. Low levels of folate may be associated with a higher risk of dementia, but more research is needed to determine its role. Two tablespoons of lemon juice contain 6 micrograms of folate, or 2 percent of your recommended daily allowance. Flavonoids Fresh lemon juice contains hesperetin, or hesperidin, an antioxidant that belongs to the family of plant-based chemicals called flavonoids. An animal study published in the January 2010 issue of the "Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition" concluded that hesperetin may help lower cholesterol and blood sugar. Another laboratory study published in October 2008 reported that citrus flavonoids may prevent the accumulation of fat deposits on artery walls. However, more research is needed to verify their full potential. Hesperetin is combined with another citrus flavonoid, diosmin, and used to reduce the severity and frequency of hemorrhoids and improved symptoms related to chronic venous insufficiency, according to the NYU Langone Medical Center.
