There are so many fantastic things you can do for your body – just check out the rest of our blog for innumerable tips on how to improve your life – but one of the very best ways to reset your systems and achieve optimal health is to tackle a juice cleanse. One-, three- and five-day cleanses are all incredible, or, if you’re really a rockstar, you can even go longer. And by the end of your cleanse, however long it is, we promise you’re going to feel amazing. But during the cleanse? Well, that can be a totally different story. Particularly at the outset, and particularly if you haven’t had the healthiest diet before you started your cleanse. Basically, what it boils down to, is that cleansing is not always comfortable.

That being said, it is totally worth it.

Some of the things you might experience during your cleanse can include: headache, cravings, fatigue, skin issues and even emotional discomfort. It doesn’t sound super appealing, but you are way stronger than you think. And knowing that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and that you’ll feel better than ever once it’s over will help you power through it all. So don’t freak out! We promise everything that you’re feeling is completely normal. Fatigue and disrupted sleep patterns are quite common during a cleanse. Stimulating the body to purge toxins requires a greater internal workload. Your body isn’t used to this, so it can cause you to feel fatigued or even to disrupt your usual sleeping patterns. Expect to feel more tired than normal, and be prepared for this! Give your body the rest it craves, taking naps when possible and going to bed early. Don’t overdo your workout regime and try to avoid physical (and mental!) stress. Headaches are another symptom you can expect during the detoxification process that happens throughout a cleanse. Because you’ve altered your normal daily routine and ditched bad habits like drinking caffeine or alcohol or eating sugars or processed foods, your body can experience symptoms of withdrawal. One of these is a headache. Also, because you are drinking so much, you will likely need to pee a lot. When this happens, you can end up dehydrating your body, so it is essential that you drink loads of water and herbal tea while you’re cleansing to help prevent and alleviate headaches. Cravings. Now you probably expected these, didn’t you? We thought so. When you change your diet and lifestyle practices, you naturally experience symptoms of withdrawal. But luckily these are temporary! Everyday coffee drinkers or frequent fast food bingers will experience those gnawing cravings more acutely than some, but eventually those desires will subside. Stay strong!

When your body is purging toxins, an easy way for it to get them out is through your skin. That means that during your cleanse, you might see a pimple or two popping up. Though this may feel a bit alarming, it’s nothing to worry about. Once your body has finished removing all toxins, your skin will be better and glowier than ever. And, finally, the one you may not have thought about: the emotional discomfort. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but many people often feel more emotional than usual while cleansing. When you remove physical toxins from the body, you also usually release old emotional toxins like fear, stress, loneliness, anxiety and sadness. If you’re not ready or you don’t expect it, it can be quite scary, but know that you are not alone. The best way to deal with this is to get lots of sunlight, drink lots of water, ground yourself in nature and keep a journal. Taking time to mediate, practice yoga and get creative can also help, as can pressing pause on social media. So although these sensations can feel overwhelming and intimidating, they all will pass. And once you’ve powered through the cleanse (or even once you’ve overcome those first few days), you’ll start to notice a world of difference in how you feel. So keep calm and carry on! You can do it!
