Learn More »Albert Peterson, New York agent and owner of the Almaelou Music Corporation, receives bad news that his star client, Conrad Birdie, has been drafted into the army. To make matters worse, Rosie Alvarez, Albert's secretary and longtime girlfriend, hands Albert her resignation. Having worked for Albert for 8 years, often working 90-hour weeks, Rosie felt that she was overworked. Additionally, Rosie loved Albert, who was unwilling to move their relationship forward. In an attempt to appease Albert, Rosie reminds him that he initially desired to become an English Teacher (cue the first song of the production, ''English Teacher'') before Conrad came along, but Albert refuses to return to that life unless they can come up with a way to get him out of debt. Ultimately, Albert makes a deal with Rose: if she can help him get out of the red, he will dissolve the company and go back to college, paving a way for their relationship. Rosie concocts a plan to have Conrad kiss a fan, selected at random, after performing a new song that Albert would write titled, ''One Last Kiss.'' Meanwhile, all of the phones in Sweet Apple, Ohio are busy as the big news among the kids is that Hugo Peabody has pinned Kim MacAfee (''The Telephone Hour''). Because of her new relationship with Hugo, Kim has decided to leave the Conrad Birdie fan club and become a woman (''How Lovely To Be A Woman''). Within minutes of deciding to leave the fan club, Kim is informed that she was selected to share a kiss with Conrad before his departure. As Albert prepares for Conrad's big moment (''We Love You Conrad''), he encounters a group of young women who are upset about Conrad's being drafted. Albert attempts to cheer them with a song (''Put On A Happy Face''). While successful in his attempt to placate this group of fans, Albert's attempts to maintain peace with Rosie and his mother are less then successful. Albert loves his mother and does not want to cause her heartache, which is inevitable if he discloses his plans to dissolve his company and marry Rosie. Albert's mother continues to treat him like a child and manipulates him to the extent of pretending that she does not know who Rosie is. When Albert finally shares his plans to close his business with his mother, she becomes upset and makes a dramatic exit. The townsfolk, specifically the Conrad Birdie Fan Club, greet Conrad at the station and escort him to meet the mayor of Sweet Apple. Hugo attempts once more to convince Kim not to go through with kissing Conrad. In the song ''One Boy'', Kim calms Hugo by assuring him that Conrad is fleeting, but he is permanent. Conrad only gets one moment, but Hugo is that special someone who will share sweet moments with her forever. Sweet Apple's mayor attempts to give Conrad the key to the city; however, Conrad's fans interrupt his speech and behave disruptively in their excitement to hear Conrad sing (''Honestly, Sincere''). As Conrad sings ''Honestly, Sincere'', one can see the effect that he has on his fans. Everywhere he dances the fans scream and faint, so by the end hardly anyone is still standing.

Learn More »Meanwhile, Kim's father, Mr. MacAfee is not pleased with Conrad's presence in town or pending kiss with his daughter. He is also displeased with the loss of his basic comforts at home due to Albert, Rosie, and Conrad staying in the MacAfees' house. Albert is able to change Mr. MacAfee's feelings by sharing that the MacAfees will make an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York (''Hymn For A Sunday Evening''). In the meantime, Mae, Albert's mother, made her way to Sweet Apple after receiving Albert's letter explaining his intention to dissolve his company. In an act of desperation, Mae identified Gloria Rasputin as a replacement secretary for Albert. Gloria, eager to break into show business, is willing to try anything to achieve her dreams. Albert decides to utilize Gloria, much to Rosie's chagrin. In response, Rosie conspires with Hugo. Finally, the night everyone has been waiting for arrives. On The Ed Sullivan Show, Conrad performs ''One Last Kiss'' as Kim, her family, and citizens of the town listen in. As the moment arrives for Conrad and Kim to kiss, Hugo runs in front of the camera and punches Conrad in the face, knocking him out. Everyone is shocked, but none so much as Albert when Rosie confesses that she aided Hugo in getting on set and planned to leave Albert.
