Maintaining a healthy body weight can help women over 60 reduce disease risks and increase their quality of life. An ideal body weight for a woman over 60 isn't a firm number, but one based based on her height and frame size. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention report that as of 2014 38.8 percent of American women were overweight or obese at that age, part of an overall increasing trend toward obesity in adults.

Hamwi Method

The University of Washington uses the Hamwi formula to help determine ideal body weights in women. This formula is: 100 pounds for the first 5 feet of height, plus 5 pounds for each additional inch over 5 feet; add 10 percent for large-framed women and subtract 10 percent for women with small frames. For example, when using the Hamwi formula, the ideal body weight of a woman who is 5 feet, 3 inches tall is 104 to 127 pounds, depending on her frame size.

Body Mass Index

Calculating BMI, or body mass index, is another way to help determine ideal body weights in women over age 60. Desirable, healthy BMIs are 18.5 to 24.9, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. BMIs are calculated by multiplying 703 by a woman’s body weight, dividing by her height in inches, then dividing by her height in inches again. For example, a woman who is 5-foot-3 and weighs 125 pounds has a BMI of 22, which is within the desirable range.

Metropolitan Tables

Metropolitan height and weight tables can also help determine desirable body weights in women, according to California State University Northridge. Metropolitan tables list ideal body weight ranges for women of different heights and frame sizes. For example, a woman over 60 who is 5 feet 2 inches tall has an ideal body weight range of 108 to 143 pounds, while a 5-foot-6 woman has a desirable weight range of 120 to 159 pounds.

Where does weight come off first?

Mostly, losing weight is an internal process. You will first lose hard fat that surrounds your organs like liver, kidneys and then you will start to lose soft fat like waistline and thigh fat. The fat loss from around the organs makes you leaner and stronger.

Where in the body you will lose weight first depends on your genes. Your focus might be to lose your belly fat first, but this is not in your control. Human is a complicated creature, so it cannot be clearly said where you lose or gain weight. But in most of the cases, the first place you put on the fat is generally the last place it comes off from. If your arms have gained fat recently, then you lose that fat first from there once you start exercising and following a healthy diet. If you have a pear-shaped body frame than you might just get smaller in size, but will retain the same frame of the body. But remember the fat cells do not disappear, if you will increase your calorie intake you will again gain weight. Mostly, losing weight is an internal process. You will first lose hard fat that surrounds your organs like liver, kidneys and then you will start to lose soft fat like waistline and thigh fat. The fat loss from around the organs makes you leaner and stronger.
