Do Tummy Teas Work?

By Jessica Cho, HealthCorps Summer Intern 2019

It seems like there’s always a new diet or health trend circulating the market. And these days, tummy teas are taking the spotlight. Tummy tea detox or “teatox” products promote decreased bloating for a slimmer-looking midsection. Celebrities like the Kardashians as well as other social media influencers advertise the effectiveness of “teatox” products, further increasing the hype. Honestly, who doesn’t want a flat, lean-looking stomach? Everyone wants and deserves to look and feel their best. But do these flat tummy tea products really deserve all the rage? Here’s the tea…

Who is it for?

Theoretically speaking, anyone could use these supposedly “detoxifying” tea products. The primary target consumers, however, are teenage to 20-30-year-old women. Since many of the tummy tea products are heavily advertised by female celebrities and social media influencers who post pictures of themselves looking slim and fit, the product thus further appeals to a young female population. Flat Tummy Co is one of the leading “teatox” companies. A quick visit to their website reveals cute and pleasing to look at pink packaging made for “babes,” keeping the products on trend.

What’s in it?

Tummy teas promote cleansing, detoxifying, metabolism supporting, and energy boosting properties. But how is this achieved? Check out this list of ingredients found in Flat Tummy’s teas. It’s important to know what each ingredient does instead of merely relying on what the company tells you. Turns out that many of the ingredients found in these “slimming” teas are diuretics and laxatives, which encourages weight loss through water and fecal expulsion from the body. So, weight loss really does occur? Well maybe, results vary from person to person, but the important thing to note is that this weight is very distinct from fat loss.

When do I use it?

Use of the product may vary. Programs range from 2-4 weeks depending on individual wants. The two teas from the Flat Tummy program include the “activate” and “cleanse” teas. Consumers are instructed to drink one cup of the activate tea every morning with breakfast. It is advised to drink the cleanse tea every other night before bed the first week and every third night before bed for all the following weeks.

Why should I trust this product?

Bottom line is, you shouldn’t. Sorry, ladies! While some people claim to have experienced drastic results, others have not. No two individuals are exactly the same. It’s also important to keep in mind who you are hearing feedback from…are they paid to give their review of the product? Though it’s true that diuretics and laxatives can cause you to lose weight, ingesting these ingredients may not be a good thing, especially if your body isn’t experiencing constipation or other signs it might need regulatory help. Always be mindful of potential side effects. Plus, as previously mentioned, this type of weight loss is not equivalent to fat loss. Once you stop drinking the tea regularly, you’re likely to add back the pounds you shed if you haven’t made more lasting lifestyle changes, too. Overall, just because something is “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe or effective. This doesn’t mean you should stray from drinking certain herbal teas if they help you feel good. However, if you are really looking for long-lasting transformative effects, a balanced diet and regular exercise is what’s going to do it for you. This may take longer and require a lot more effort, but your health and fitness will improve significantly more in the long-run. And that’s way more rewarding!

What tea makes you burn fat?

green tea The most popular and well-studied tea for weight loss is definitely green tea. It's filled with antioxidants called catechins, including a substance called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is believed to increase metabolism and help burn fat.

The next time you pop into your favorite coffee shop, consider skipping the pumpkin spice latte, caramel macchiato, or cold brew iced coffee and go for a soothing, steaming cup of tea instead. Because in addition to tea’s well-known power to soothe sore throats and even help prevent cancer and diabetes, it may help you reach your weight loss goals. "Drinking tea may support weight loss or weight maintenance because it fills the void of beverages that are high in sugar and calories," says Josh Axe, D.N.M., founder of Ancient Nutrition. "When you switch out flavored lattes, coffee with added cream and sugar, and sugary sodas or juices and replace them with tea, you are cutting a massive amount of calories a day." (We too, love Starbucks' salted caramel mocha, but a grande packs a whopping 420 calories compared to zero in their wellness tea!) Aside from being calorie-friendly (unsweetened tea is basically plant-flavored water), certain teas have antioxidant-rich compounds that may encourage weight loss, while also touting other health benefits such as improved sleep. However, it's worth noting that further research is needed to confirm the exact relationship between tea and losing weight. With that being said, enjoying a daily cup of steeped goodness definitely won't to do you any harm, and can certainly keep sweet coffee cravings at bay. So, whether you enjoy them hot or iced, here are the teas that may provide the biggest boosts, plus some recommended picks to shop.
