How long does it take to digest food — from the time you eat it to the time you excrete it? Answer From Elizabeth Rajan, M.D. Digestion time varies among individuals and between men and women. After you eat, it takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine. Food then enters your large intestine (colon) for further digestion, absorption of water and, finally, elimination of undigested food. It takes about 36 hours for food to move through the entire colon. All in all, the whole process — from the time you swallow food to the time it leaves your body as feces — takes about two to five days, depending on the individual.

How long after giving up alcohol will my liver recover?

In general, the time it takes for your liver to detox from alcohol depends on factors such as:

How much alcohol was consumed?

How long have you been drinking?

How long has it been since you last had a drink?

How much time is given to the liver to heal itself?

Have you ever detoxed before?

Are you taking any medications?

What degree of liver damage has occurred?

Liver cells die every time your liver filters alcohol, but a healthy liver is robust and able to renew itself. Long-term alcohol abuse, however, can impair the liver’s ability to repair and renew its cells, leading to permanent liver damage.
