Learn More »Some of us might be putting in extra time in the gym to get summer ready. Others might be trying out a new diet plan in hopes of shedding a few extra pounds. Increasing the intensity as we head into the summer season is usually with the goal of looking and feeling our best. In this post, we are going to dive into five ways to naturally detox and minimize bloat on the days it matters most! Start with warm lemon water. This habit is a fantastic way to hydrate first thing in the morning and naturally detox the body. Plus, it’s a soothing way to start the day. Extra bonus: ask for a cup of hot lemon water before your meal when eating out to ease digestion. Eat minimally processed. Foods that have been highly processed (those found in a package) can contain manufactured ingredients that causes underlying inflammation in the body and almost always have high sodium levels. Excess sodium can cause swelling and water retention in the body. Make it a goal to fill your plate with leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and lean protein. Incorporate potassium-rich foods into your diet. Foods such as bananas, avocados and coconut water can help balance the fluid levels in the body. Try this no-sugar-added chocolate avocado pudding for a healthy dose of potassium in a decadent dessert. Focus on gut health. Feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut can result in a variety of health benefits, including a slimmer waistline. Probiotic-rich foods include yogurt, kefir, miso paste, sauerkraut and kimchi. Give this Asian quinoa power bowl with miso dressing a try for Meatless Monday. Avoid cruciferous vegetables. Normally, I would never suggest minimizing this vegetable family. They have been strongly linked to playing an active role in fighting cancer. However, when it comes to talking about bloating and gas, they can be one of the worst offenders. These vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage and Brussel sprouts. There’s no need to eliminate them completely from your diet (in fact, you don’t want to), but if you’ve got a beach day or event coming up, you might want to minimize them for a few days. A little bloating from time-to-time is normal. If you notice this uncomfortable symptom occurring frequently, try food journaling to see if you can get to the root cause.
