If you’re a coffee drinker, you’ve probably heard more than your fair share about tough coffee stains on your teeth. While avoiding coffee completely may be the easiest way to avoid those pesky stains, sometimes skipping your daily cup for the sake of white teeth isn’t in the cards! That’s why we recommend taking the following steps to lessen the impact of coffee on your teeth.

Brush and floss your teeth immediately afterward.

Your dental enamel (the hard surface on the outside of your teeth) is full of microscopic indentations and ridges. When you drink your daily coffee, the dark pigments gradually settle onto the surface of your teeth, causing a stain. Brushing and flossing immediately is the easiest way to prevent coffee stains from settling into these nooks and crannies. This also removes the bacteria from plaque that causes discoloration and decay. So, if you can, do a quick brush after every cup.

When you can’t brush your teeth, rinse!

So what do you do if you’re drinking coffee on the go? We recommend swishing water in your mouth. This will remove some of the coffee residues from the surface of your teeth.

Try using a straw.

We know the idea of drinking hot coffee with a straw might seem unusual, but it helps! By drinking through a straw, you allow the coffee to bypass the outer surfaces of your teeth. This isn’t a cure-all fix, as you’ll likely still have staining liquids in your mouth as you drink. That said, you’ll still decrease your enamel’s exposure to the coffee, which can lessen its impact over time.

Drink it quickly!

Many coffee lovers want to savor their morning cup or even sit with their coffee next to them for an extended period of time. However, this is probably the worst thing you can do when trying to keep your teeth white. Remember, the less time the coffee has to sit on your teeth, the better. So try having your cup of coffee only over your break. Then, rinse and/or brush immediately afterward.

Get a professional whitening treatment.

One of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures is in-office teeth whitening, which is much more effective and long-lasting than at-home methods. (In fact, at TruBlu Dentistry, we utilize a method that can lighten your teeth up to 8 times more than your average whitening toothpaste or strips.) The procedure is simple: we use a peroxide gel on the teeth’s surface and enhance the bleaching process with a light or laser. This procedure is very effective in fighting even the toughest coffee stains!

Schedule your biannual check-up.

It isn’t easy to keep a beautiful smile without healthy teeth. The consensus is that patients should visit their dentist at least twice a year to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis (both of which can create a yellowing effect on your teeth!). At TruBlu Dentistry, we’ll also scrape residue from the surface of your teeth and perform a deep cleaning. By sticking to this biannual schedule, you can ensure you have the healthy, bright white smile you’ve always wanted. Want to brighten your smile? Call TruBlu Dentistry to set up a professional whitening or check-up today!

Why do athletes not drink coffee?

New research, however, suggests that athletes may want to lay off the coffee and energy drinks in their free time — it could hamper caffeine's performance-enhancing benefits when they need them most. Share on Pinterest Researchers say regular caffeine intake could hinder the drug's performance-enhancing benefits.

Just as most of us embrace the caffeine kick from our morning cup of joe, athletes often turn to caffeine to boost their sports performance. New research, however, suggests that athletes may want to lay off the coffee and energy drinks in their free time — it could hamper caffeine’s performance-enhancing benefits when they need them most. It is found in coffee, energy drinks, tea, and even some pain medications. Its widespread consumption means that we may not consider caffeine to be a drug, but it is. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system to reduce fatigue and drowsiness. It may also benefit exercise performance; research has shown that it can improve endurance and increase muscular strength. As such, it is no surprise that caffeine is a popular go-to performance enhancer for athletes. A new study, however, suggests that consuming caffeine on a regular basis may desensitize athletes to the performance-enhancing effects of the drug. Corresponding author Dr. Brendan Egan, of the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University in Ireland, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.
