One of the areas of the face men most often struggle with as they get older is the jawline. Even those of us who work hard to keep fit, have a healthy diet and follow an involved grooming routine struggle to achieve the “cut from granite” side profile as the years add up. Fortunately, specialist skincare expert Alexander Johnston is here to show us how to make the best of our jawlines without resorting to drastic (surgical) measures.

1. Engage in facial exercises

Your face is full of muscles and in the same way that your arms get pumped through bench presses, your facial muscles will get stronger and tighter with a regular work-out. There are a multitude of YouTube videos you can watch to guide you on this, but I tend to stick to a simpler method. First, place a hot (but not too hot) wash cloth on the face for five minutes. This will relax the muscles and soften the skin. Second, while making full eye contact with yourself in the mirror (it's important to own it) open your mouth wide and recite the five vowels, in order, in the most exaggerated way you can while stretching your neck. Yes, you'll look crazy, but I swear it feels good and gives your face an effective and gentle work-out. Do this daily and you will see a difference.

2. Give your jaw a massage

Facial massage and lymphatic drainage (the process of stimulating the lymph nodes to flush out toxins) can both help to improve skin firmness and tighten features. The most simple technique for the jawline is to make a “V” with your index finger and middle finger around your ears and then apply pressure as you run your index finger along the bottom of your jawline and your middle finger along the top until they meet at the end of your chin. I do this slowly and gently eight to ten times after applying a firming cream – Dr Irena Eris’ Volumeric night cream is perfect for this. You can also use a sculpting tool to intensify the experience. Again, follow the line of your jaw on the underside and gently apply pressure to the skin. I store mine in the fridge to give my face an extra boost of cold to stimulate the blood flow and encourage the skin to tighten.
