BPA, or bisphenol A, is a compound found in many plastic materials, including some plastic bottles. BPA is commonly found in polycarbonate plastics, the same type of plastic used to create plastic bottles and food containers. Resins, which contain BPA, may also be used in the inner lining of tin cans and bottle caps. The adverse health effects of BPA include hormonal changes, increased risks of high blood pressure, increased risk of type-2 diabetes, and behavioral changes in children. These typically happen when BPA leaches into food and drink through their containers, which is why many food and beverage suppliers now opt for BPA-free plastics in their products.

What Are BPA-Free Water Bottles?

There are many different types of plastics and resins that are made into plastic bottles, however, not all of them contain BPA. BPA-free water bottles are plastic bottles that contain no traces of the bisphenol. These bottles are deemed safe for food and beverage use, and are usually marked with a BPA-free logo. BPA-free water bottles are generally accepted as food-safe, as the plastic water bottles do not leach harmful chemicals into the water like BPA plastics do. They are typically accepted in recycling plants, albeit with some exceptions depending on the bottle type. BPA-free water bottles may also come in alternative forms such as a reusable water bottle, a glass or borosilicate bottle, or insulated water bottles that are meant to be reused over and over again. These bottles should not contain any BPA at all, and should be safe enough for consumers to reuse again and again, regardless if they are dishwasher safe or not.

The Best BPA-Free Water Bottles in 2022

Best Overall: S’well Stainless Steel Water Bottle

The S'well Stainless Steel Water Bottle tops our list as the best all-around BPA-free water bottle. Its insulated body maintains the temperature of drinks for an extended period of time, easily keeping cold drinks cold all day, and hot drinks hot for several hours. Its narrow mouth may make it difficult to clean, but it makes drinking from this flask much easier.

Best for Kids: Hydro Flask Kids Wide Mouth Water Bottle

Hydro Flask became the top seller for adult water bottles around the latter months of 2019, but it doesn't stop the brand from appearing in our 2022 list. Their wide mouth insulated bottles made for kids feature a stainless steel body, and a completely safe plastic straw lid that contains absolutely no BPA or phthalates.

Best Reusable Plastic Bottle: Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth

Nalgene is one of the top producers for plastic water bottles, and their Tritan Wide Mouth bottles are some of the best reusable water bottles around. Dishwasher safe and completely free from any BPA and other toxic substances, Nalgene is easy to clean, maintain, and upkeep. The see-through plastic also allows the consumer to take note of the water levels.

Best Heavy Duty Bottle: Klean Kanteen TKWide Water Bottle

Klean Kanteen's TKWide Water Bottle is the best overall in the heavy duty category. These help consumers stay hydrated during a hiking trip, or brought along in a gym bag for convenient water replenishing. The insulated bottle is relatively heavier than the rest of this list, but it can take a heavier blow from dropping or hitting as well.

The Benefits of BPA-Free Bottles

Bottles made without any BPA offer no ill health effects from regular use. Whether the bottle is made from plastic, metal, or other materials, the best water bottle would be ones that keep the water free from any toxic chemicals or impurities. However, we suggest going for a stainless steel, heavy duty plastic, or aluminum bottle instead of a glass bottle as even the best glass water bottle can easily shatter. There are plenty of alternatives in the market for you to keep BPA away from your consumption, so keep an open mind out for these alternatives.

Consider using BPA and phthalate-free plastics around your home as well, not just in your water bottle. Use silicone or other safe tray alternatives to make ice cubes, and make sure your dinnerware is free from BPA substances as well.

How to Tell If A Water Bottle is BPA Free?

The best way to tell if your plastic bottles are BPA-free is to do your own research on the company you sourced the bottles from. Companies would often inform you whether their water bottles are BPA-free or not, and you can find more information on their website or online. It also helps to know the plastic group numerical codes in determining BPA-free plastics. Check the recycling logo on the bottom of your bottle to know what kind of plastic material was used to create the bottle. A numerical code of 1, 2, or 5 are all universally accepted as BPA-free plastics. However, a numerical code of 3 or 6 may contain BPA, but not in every case. Numerical codes 3 and 6 cover a wide range of plastics and styrene, so it is best to be wary of the material used with these codes. Numerical code 7 is used for plastics that contain BPA, among other substances. These are not often used in food products, but it is best to avoid #7 plastics altogether.
