A numerical code of 1, 2, or 5 are all universally accepted as BPA-free plastics. However, a numerical code of 3 or 6 may contain BPA, but not in every case. Numerical codes 3 and 6 cover a wide range of plastics and styrene, so it is best to be wary of the material used with these codes. Numerical code 7 is used for plastics that contain BPA, among other substances. These are not often used in food products, but it is best to avoid #7 plastics altogether.
