Personally, I don't often find myself craving a 24 ounce smoothie, so the size is a bit much. Their large cups also pose an environmental issue. Their cups are made of Styrofoam, which is recyclable but there aren't any recycling bins in the cafe, only trash cans.

Learn More »Over the past few years, a new smoothie and sandwich chain has gained popularity and risen to the top of the smoothie hierarchy. It’s called Tropical Smoothie Cafe, often known as just “Trop.” In my opinion, it’s kind of awful. I haven’t been there very many times and I will say that their service is adequate, but everything else about the place is just not good. When I walk into Tropical Smoothie, at least the one that we all know on Ann Arbor Road and Haggerty, an uncomfortable feeling washes over me. I suppose it’s because it’s not very welcoming to walk into any kind of restaurant and be greeted with the smell of raw fruits and vegetables when you’re used to being greeted with the smell of hot food being sautéed, baked or fried. Tropical Smoothie smells like a brand new restaurant, even though it’s not. It smells of carrots and water and hesitancy. Looking at the menu and ordering is another unpleasant part of the experience. Their smoothies sound good in theory and fun names like “Bahama Mama” and “Avocolada” make them more appealing and escalate your expectations, leading you to be even more disappointed when the employee asks for six of your hard-earned dollars in exchange for a smoothie. Tropical Smoothie’s drinks are overpriced. If their smoothies were made entirely of fresh produce, seeds and supplements, they would be worth $6, the average price of their drinks. Unfortunately, their smoothies are mostly made of ice. I cringe watching the employees load up the blender with ice cubes along with handfuls of fruit and vegetables, knowing that I’m about to pay too much money for a cup of blended ice. Another ingredient that decreases the value of their smoothies is sugar. This doesn’t decrease the price value, but the health value. Most of their smoothies have turbinado sugar added in, though you are able to request them without it. This is on the menu in small print, though, so customers may not realize their smoothie has added sugar. The added sweetness makes their smoothies taste better, but contradicts Tropical Smoothie’s promotion of good health. Their smoothies are huge, which can be viewed as a positive and a negative. The immense size is a good thing because, if you want a huge smoothie and your cravings can only be satiated by 24 ounces of blended produce, they’re one of the only places that offer that size. Personally, I don’t often find myself craving a 24 ounce smoothie, so the size is a bit much. Their large cups also pose an environmental issue. Their cups are made of Styrofoam, which is recyclable but there aren’t any recycling bins in the cafe, only trash cans. This isn’t an issue if customers take their smoothies home because they could recycle them in their own recycling bin. If the cups are thrown away, though, they take over 500 years to biodegrade in landfills. Styrofoam isn’t the sturdiest material either; an aggressive smoothie drinker could poke a hole in the cup with their straw if they weren’t careful. Tropical Smoothie should offer recycling bins for customers to throw their cups in after they’re finished. A next step would be using a material for their cups that’s better for the environment. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has potential that is yet to be fulfilled. They are still a relatively new operation. If they took steps to improve, such as filling their drinks with more fruit and less ice and making an effort to be more environmentally friendly, I would give them my business more often.
