Does quercetin cause muscle pain?

Quercetin has also shown anti-nociceptive properties in both chemical and thermal models in mice. The anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties of quercetin could result in decreases in muscle pain ratings for those who are untrained and exercising at a high intensity.

Quercetin is a naturally-occurring dietary flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables. Quercetin ingestion for 4 weeks in healthy humans has shown a decrease in markers of inflammation in vitro but not in vivo. Dietary quercetin supplementation for 3-8 weeks in mice has consistently shown a decrease in markers of inflammation. Quercetin has also shown anti-nociceptive properties in both chemical and thermal models in mice. The anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties of quercetin could result in decreases in muscle pain ratings for those who are untrained and exercising at a high intensity. The effects of dietary quercetin supplementation in untrained humans are unknown. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of short-duration quercetin supplementation on muscle pain intensity ratings associated with performance cycling in untrained men. Using a double-blind, pretest-posttest, control-group design, 30 recreationally-active, but not endurance-trained, young men were randomly assigned to Quercetin and Placebo groups. Measurements of quadriceps pain intensity associated with cycling on a maximal-effort 10 min ride following 60 min of submaximal cycling at 50% VO2peak and during VO2peak tests at least 2 days prior were assessed before and after 7-16 d of supplementation with 1 g/d of quercetin with vitamins in a fruit punch beverage or a placebo beverage. There were no significant differences between the groups in quadriceps pain intensity ratings during the performance rides and the VO2peak tests. In addition, there were no significant differences in pain intensity or in the number of body sites subjects indicated were painful following the either exercise session. In conclusion, dietary quercetin supplementation with 1 g/d for 7-16 d does not decrease quadriceps pain intensity during or following high-intensity cycling performance rides in recreationally-active men. What drugs interact with quercetin?

Be careful if you are taking drugs such as antibiotics, cyclosporine, warfarin, or drugs that are changed by the liver. Quercetin may change how these drugs work and raise the risk of side effects.

Quercetin is a plant pigment (flavonoid) that people sometimes take as a medicine. It is found in many plants and foods. Most studies look at the impact of flavonoids like quercetin within the diet rather than as a supplement. Why do people take quercetin? People take quercetin to try to manage a variety of issues, including: Heart and vessel problems

Lowering blood pressure

Prostate infections

Preventing upper respiratory infections

Allergies

Disease prevention Early quercetin research on heart and vessel disease is mixed. Some study results are positive but some are open to debate. For example, researchers link eating lots of foods high in quercetin to a lower risk of heart-related death in older men. But other studies are less convincing. Some research suggests that oral doses of quercetin may decrease pain from prostate infections. Some athletes try to increase endurance and improve athletic performance by using quercetin. Although animal studies are promising, the effects in humans, if any, are likely small. One of the biggest benefits to athletes taking quercetin is in protection from URI after intense workouts.
