This year, many have taken the time they have at hand to lose the little weight they’ve gained during the lockdown period. However, now a new study has revealed that losing weight can accelerate the ageing process, making you look older.

This is according to a study conducted by researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin. They studied CT head scans of 19 middle-aged volunteers (ranging from age 46 to 57 years) twice, a decade apart. They discovered that facial fat that was reduced by over 12 percent over a decade apart showed ‘volume loss’ theory of facial ageing. They discovered that while many presumed that gravity was responsible for the sagging skin that many experience after weight loss, actually, the weight loss accelerates the ageing process deflating the cheeks and making the jowls look heavy. Even though each volunteer showed different results, all had a considerable loss of midface fat volume. It decreased from 46.50cc in the initial scan to around 40.8c at the follow-up scan a decade later -- roughly 12 percent. Moreover, this amount was different at different levels. For instance, the superficial compartment showed a drop of 11/3 percent average, compared to 18.4 percent below the skin. Dr Aaron Morgan of the Medical College of Wisconsin, lead author of the study, said in a statement, “In particular, we think deep facial fat loss removes support from the overlying fat. That causes deepening of the nasolabial fold, which runs from the nose to the mouth. Meanwhile, fat loss closer to the surface makes the cheeks appear deflated.” He added, “The upper face has less fat, to begin with, so fat loss is more apparent. In contrast, the cheek or buccal area has relatively little fat loss, so that area appears fuller as changes occur in other areas of the midface.” Morgan suggested that this could help future plastic surgeons to replace the midface fat more appropriately in future, “We think our findings will help plastic surgeons design more natural approaches to facial rejuvenation, with the aim of recreating the facial fat distribution of youth. This proves there is volume depletion and not just laxity of tissues with ageing. So, volume replacement should be used in addition to surgical procedures to attempt to recreate the youthful face.”
