In particular, one case report found drinking Yogi DeTox tea 3 times daily for 14 days caused acute liver failure in a 60-year-old woman ( 8 ). According to the report, six of the ingredients in Yogi DeTox tea, including skullcap root, gardenia root, rhubarb root, juniper berry, black pepper, and cinnamon bark, were shown to harm liver function in human, animal, and test-tube studies ( 8 ). Furthermore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not strictly regulate the safety, effectiveness, or quality of herbal supplements ( 9 ). Therefore, certain contaminants and toxins in herbal products, or the presence of other ingredients that may not be listed on the label, could also contribute to negative side effects ( 8 , 10 ). While it’s unclear which ingredient caused liver failure in the case report mentioned above or whether other factors may have contributed, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional before adding herbal products to your routine and use supplements only as directed.
