Do you make (or are about to make) your own Lotions & Creams? Do you ever struggle with how to get the cream into the jar in a tidy/pretty way, without making a mess?

If so, I have a great tip for you.

Use a Ziploc baggie to package your creams. It works perfectly!

To share/demonstrate this idea, I thought I would make a pic tutorial with a quick video at the end.

Here’s what you’ll need:

freshly made cream (if you want an amazing recipe, get mine here)

clean jars for packaging your cream (I’m using 1 oz. PET jars)

a Ziploc baggie (I prefer the thicker freezer type, for more stability)

a glass Pryex type container, to hold your baggie upright during filling

scissors to cut the corner of the baggie

sanitary gloves (Note: I’m not wearing any in the tutorial or video, because I can’t operate my phone/camera with them on). In this pic above, my Shea Butter Cream has been made, and my containers have been wiped out with alcohol. We’re ready to package! Take the Ziploc baggie and fold over the top (turn it down) before attempting to fill it with cream. This keeps the top of the Ziploc clean, and helps hold the baggie open. Find a sturdy container that’s the right size to put the baggie into (since a baggie won’t stand up by itself without tipping over). In this case, it’s a pretty small batch of cream (16 ounces)… so I’m using a 2-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup to hold my quart-sized Ziploc baggie. Set the baggie in the Pyrex container, and carefully pour the cream into the baggie. If it’s too thick to pour without making a mess, use a clean spoon and spoon it into the baggie. Use a small spatula on the edges to scrape out the rest, and wipe off the spatula on the inside the baggie. Get it all into the baggie. Ideally the Pyrex is the right height (not too big/tall), so the weight of the cream doesn’t pull the baggie down off the top of the Pyrex. Once all the cream is in, use a clean paper towel to clean off any excess that’s near the zipper seal, and then press to seal the bag well. You don’t want/need extra air in the baggie, so if it looks puffy with air, open a small area & carefully release most of the air. Re-zip, and do a double check to make sure it’s sealed 100%. When you’re ready to go… use your fingers to press the cream out of one of the bottom corners of the bag and cut off a small piece with scissors. I like to cut about 1 centimeter in size (no larger than 1/2 inch). You want to clip off just enough for an even flow, depending on the size of your container. A larger container could tolerate a larger hole, but it will also fill faster, so be ready. Too large of a corner cut will result in an uncontrollable/messy flow.

Now carefully fold over the top part of the Ziploc baggie, and gently squeeze towards the cut corner opening. Be sure a jar is directly under you, in case the cream comes out quickly. Gently squeeze & fill each jar. If your cream is thicker, or your jar is larger, you’ll want to move your hands around in a circular motion (like if you’ve ever done self-serve frozen yogurt in a cup). Try not to overfill… you can easily go back and add a bit more with this method, but if you have to remove cream, it will be messy. Once finished, pick up the jar & gently tap it on a soft surface (a towel, or your hand) to remove any trapped air bubbles. Then clean the edge/rim of the jars (if needed) with a clean paper towel & rubbing alcohol, and put on clean lids. Wipe the outside of the containers (and top of lids) with rubbing alcohol before applying a label. And, you’re done!

Here’s a quick video of the actual filling part:
