In water fasting, you forgo all whole and liquid foods other than water for a period of time. Short water fasts, lasting three to five days, are less strenuous on your body than longer ones and can still give you the purported benefits of a fast. According to the American Cancer Society, people who practice metabolic therapy -- the use of special diets and enzymes to detoxify the body -- believe in the health benefits of fasting, including water fasting. However, scientific evidence for the body's ability to detoxify is scant, according to NYU Langone Medical Center. Check with your doctor before you start one, and go off the cleanse with these healthy foods.

Fresh Juices and Broths

When breaking your water fast, start with consuming a limited amount of fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Organic fruits and vegetables are recommended, although the most important factor is that the juices are freshly made and contain no preservatives. Whole raw fruits and veggies are also allowed. Joel Fuhrman, a nutrition researcher, general practitioner and author of "Fasting and Eating for Health," states that you can also drink clear broths made from vegetables or bone, keeping them as free of fat and whole foods as possible.

Cooked Fruits and Vegetables

Starting on the second day after a fast, incorporate soft-cooked foods, such as well-cooked vegetables, into your diet. However, do not include meat yet, even if it's well-cooked. You can however, include cultured foods, such as yogurt. Choose one with probiotics, bacteria that are good for your intestinal flora.

Whole Foods and a Normal Diet

Starting on day three or four, incorporate other whole cooked foods, such as whole grains; nuts; and raw vegetables and fruits. Keep your grains and legumes well cooked, so that they are soft and easy to digest. On day five, you can start incorporating non-cultured dairy products into your diet, such as milk, as well as eggs and meats. Make low-fat food choices, so you do not shock your system. Like with the fresh juices and cooked veggies, organic foods are not necessary, although they are recommended.

Do liquid fasts work?

Liquid diets can work, like any diet that gives you fewer calories than you use. These diets can help by taking the guesswork out of portion control. They're also beneficial if you have trouble chewing food. But the results may not last.

What Is a Liquid Diet?

As the name suggests, a liquid diet means you're getting all, or at least most, of your calories from drinks. There are different kinds. A clear liquid diet is something a doctor may put you on for a short while. You’re often asked to follow one before a medical procedure or if you're having some digestive issues. You won’t get the calories and nutrients you need with one of these diets, so you can’t be on them for long and shouldn’t do them without medical supervision. People choose to go on other types of liquid diets for weight loss. Typically, they’re limited to fruit or vegetable juices, or shakes. These drinks may replace all of your meals or just one or two meals (usually breakfast and lunch). You also get snacks on some of these plans. These diets can cut the calories you take in and can help you lose weight, but you shouldn’t stay on them for very long. Talk to your doctor before you go on a liquid diet. You’ll need to make sure you get enough important nutrients, like fiber and protein.
