They contain nutrients that may help promote weight loss, and their juice and zest add flavor to food without added calories.

Effect of Vitamin C

A study published in June 2005 in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" reported that the more vitamin C you consume, the more likely you are to have a lower body mass than someone who isn't getting enough of the nutrient. A person who has a diet high in vitamin C burns 30 percent more fat during exercise than a person with a low vitamin C intake. An average lime with a 2-inch diameter contains approximately 20 milligrams of vitamin C, 22 percent of the recommended daily intake for a man and 27 percent of that for a woman.

Potential Benefits of Fiber

Eating a diet rich in fiber may lower your risk of obesity, reported a "Nutrition Reviews" article published in 2005. Soluble fiber slows your digestion rate and can help stave off hunger by keeping your blood sugar level stable. Insoluble fiber gives you a full feeling without adding extra calories. Limes are rich in both types of fiber, with about 2 total grams in every medium-sized fruit. Try adding chunks of fresh lime to your salads, roasting slices with meat or poultry, or adding preserved limes to stews or pasta dishes.

Fill Up on Lime-Flavored Water

Drinking 16 ounces, or 2 cups, of water before eating meals helps with weight loss, say the results of a study published in "Obesity" in 2010. Test subjects who drank the water and adhered to a low-calorie diet -- 1,200 calories per day for women, 1,500 a day for men -- lost more than 15 pounds in three months. They kept it off and lost more weight than subjects not drinking the water. If plain water isn't your favorite, try sprucing it up by squeezing in the juice of a lime. In addition to more flavor, you'll get the benefit of the vitamin C: The juice from one lime yields 13 milligrams of the nutrient.
