Sleep can already be difficult to come by, but did you know that your skin may actually be the cause? (Stay with us.) While we already know that losing sleep can screw with your skin, recent research has shown that acne may be messing with your sleep right back. Three studies over the last three years have looked at predominantly female populations of varying ages to determine that acne and sleep do have an effect on one another. One study presented at the 2022 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting reported that over half (54 percent) of the individuals with acne reported lack of sleep, while over half (53 percent) of the patients without acne reported a more restful sleep. Another study published in December 2019 looked into other aspects such as depression and quality of life to rule out as the possible cause for fatigue. When controlling depressive episodes and quality of life, they still found that acne and sleep quality were directly correlated. For instance, while acne may be the cause for a bad night's sleep, a bad night's sleep may also be the cause for the acne. While some experts we asked about the studies declined to comment because their findings leave much to interpretation, two dermatologists offered Allure their take on the research, whether there's any validity behind these claims, and why this connection exists.
