We’ve all done it at some point – over-indulged, got into some bad eating patterns, been on a sugar trip, and of course the holiday season splurge! This is the time to start a short detox, to set your body on the right track and help you with your weight loss goals. While the time it takes to detox from substances varies from person to person, detox programs are generally 3, 5, or 7 days long, and should not be repeated more than 4 times a year. A typical detox diet involves a period of fasting, followed by a strict diet of fruit, vegetables, fruit juices, and water. Sometimes a detox also includes herbs, herbal teas, supplements, and colon cleanses or enemas. While a cleanse is all about raw foods rich in antioxidants, we have been made to believe that drinking coffee and including caffeine in our detox diet is not ideal. However, as it turns out, you can actually still drink coffee while on a cleanse….black coffee is the way to go. For those that need that caffeine boost for physical energy and alertness, black coffee can in fact be a part of your detox diet. Make sure that your coffee does not contain any sweeteners or creamers as they can add calories to this otherwise zero calorie beverage. However, if you just cannot stomach it black and sugarless here is a guide for you: Use the following as dairy milk alternatives: plant-based milks, such as almond milk, soy milk, and cashew milk. Use of artificial creamers should be strictly avoided. Use coconut palm sugar, or even honey, instead of regular white sugar. It must be said, however, that omitting all sugars may be the best way to go if you are trying to lose weight. A detox diet requires you to withdraw from a lot of foods, many of which are rich in carbohydrates – our main source of energy. The body can take a while to adjust to the change and therefore you may feel drained of energy, lethargic and weak. Drinking coffee will help to boost your energy levels, and keep your mind alert. But your body may also be dependent on caffeine for energy. Therefore, while it is ok to consume black coffee on a detox, if you want to reduce your dependency on caffeine, try introducing decaff. Do this partially for one week and increase the proportion each week.
