Are you still clean if you shower at night?

“Showering in the evening removes all the impurities that have built up on your skin throughout the day – oil, dirt, sweat are the main culprits," she says. "Removing these impurities can be easily done by performing a deep cleanse whilst in the shower, meaning you go to bed with clean, fresh, and clear skin.

It's a debate we regularly have on our GLAMOUR morning Zoom calls: is it better to shower first thing in the morning or last thing at night?

The majority of the team prefer to freshen up with a morning shower, others have to shower before bed to avoid taking the day's grime onto their sheets, whilst some do both. But which option is right? And is one better for your general hygiene? We asked three leading experts: a GP, a healer and a skin doctor to weigh in...

The doctor's verdict

According to Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, GP and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor, taking a shower morning or night is usually down to personal preference and lifestyle. "A morning shower is probably more popular with people as it awakens the senses and refreshes you ready for the day ahead, however it’s not necessarily better for you," he said. Rather, he argues that allowing time for an evening shower is a good way to relax, to soothe any work or gym tensions by letting the hot water hit your shoulders and back, wash away the dirt from the day and also promote a better night’s sleep as you will feel clean, relaxed and sleepy from the hot water and steam. "The main benefit of night-time showers however is that during the day, your body and your hair can collect airborne allergens and irritants, dirt and grime, especially in the summer months from pollen, chemicals and sweat. So if you go to bed without showering, these will then transfer to your bed and sheets and may not only promote dirty bedding and night time allergies but could also cause itchy, irritated and dry skin as well as facial skin issues such as acne due to dirty sheets and pillow cases from day time oil and dirt." Whilst he says that it is personal preference and time/work dependent, generally, he believes a night-time shower is considered best for cleanliness and for promoting a good night’s sleep.

The skin doctor

Sasha Core of Beauty + Skin Clinic believes there are different benefits associated with showering in the morning or at night, but agrees with Doctor Aragona Giuseppe and believes one of them is the clear winner. And since skin regenerates whilst we sleep, your new skin cells will be healthy rather than clogged up. Clogged skin can cause annoying conditions like blackheads, whiteheads, and acne." She acknowledges that although bedding should be changed regularly anyway, going to bed without showering means bedding becomes covered with dirt and oils more quickly, so even if you are showering in the evening, do ensure that your bedding is changed at least once per week.

Should you shower in the morning or at night?

“Humans tend to perspire at night,” Dr. Goldenberg said. “When you wake up in the morning, there's all this sweat and bacteria from the sheets that's just kind of sitting there on your skin.” So take a quick shower in the morning, he said, “to wash all of that gunk and sweat off that you've been sleeping in all night.”

There were few greater sins in my childhood home than going to bed dirty, though I could sometimes appease my mother by just washing my feet before slipping between the clean sheets. Now, as an adult, I cannot bear to get in bed with the grime of the day clinging to my skin. And I’m not alone. We are the takers of night showers, and we stand in opposition to the takers of morning showers, a vocal many I’ve bickered with time and again. Don’t they feel rushed by the countdown to work or school beating down with the shower spray? Don’t they want to squeeze in every possible, precious moment of sleep? Do they really step outside on icy mornings with wet hair, or take even more time to blow-dry? There’s no rationale, or so I thought.

The case for a morning shower

People who love morning showers will tell you there is no better start to the day than by blasting away unruly bed hair and the crust of sleep, or for those who are particularly ambitious, wash off after a morning workout.
