Why is Panniculectomy more than a tummy tuck?

It takes about two to five hours for a surgeon to perform a panniculectomy. The exact timeline depends on the length of incisions made, as well as the amount of excess skin that's being removed. You may feel slight pain for several months, along with some numbness. General anesthesia prevents pain during procedure. You may be in pain for the first few days following the procedure.A horizontal cut is made in your lower belly, just above the pubic area. The surgeon will remove the overhanging extra skin and fat, called an apron or pannus. The surgeon will close your cut with sutures (stitches). Small tubes, called drains, may be inserted to allow fluid to drain out of the wound as the area heals. Most stretch marks are typically taken out along with the skin removal. AWAKE Abdominoplasty is an outpatient procedure, avoiding a costly hospital charge under General Anesthesia. Since the patient remains awake during the surgery, the patient will see the results before the completion of the surgery. Results: Average abdominal skin resection was 16.1 pounds, ranging from 10.3 to 49 pounds. Hernia repair was necessary in 13 patients. Additional surgery performed at the time of panniculectomy included skin reduction surgery of the back (40 percent), chest (32 percent), inner thigh (28 percent), and arm (28 percent).During a panniculectomy, there is almost no limit on the amount of skin and fat that can be removed. In your case, skin and fat can be removed from hip to hip; this is what I would suggest for your abdomen. This amount of skin and fat can be safely removed in one surgery.ACTIVITY/EXERCISETake it easy for the first 3-4 weeks following your surgery. We want you to drink plenty of fluids and rest. We do want you up and walking around after surgery, but no exercising. You may start brisk walking around week 4, but absolutely no running.Drains are usually removed when draining 30cc or less over a few consecutive days. Most commonly the drain with lower output is removed at approximately one week post-operatively. The second drain is usually removed the following week when drainage has tapered appropriately. You will likely have several drains near your incision. Your doctor will tell you how to take care of them. You may have a special girdle, called a binder, placed around the area where you had surgery. This binder will help ease swelling and pain. After the procedure, you can expect your low abdomen to look flatter and smoother. Most people also notice a new boost in their self-esteem after their panniculectomy because they feel more positive about their appearance. You should avoid strenuous activity and anything that makes you strain for 4 to 6 weeks. You will probably be able to return to work in about 4 weeks. It takes about 3 months for swelling to go down and wounds to heal. But it can take up to 2 years to see the final results of the surgery and for scars to fade.Wear your binder continuously for the 7-10 days. You may take it off to shower. It is important to walk slightly “stooped over” bent at the hips for 5-10 days to reduce tension on the lower abdominal incision. This helps to protect the incision as it heals and also improves the scar long-term.A panniculectomy is typically a successful procedure, but it does have a high complication rate. A 2021 retrospective review found that the procedure has a 22.3% postoperative complication rate. How many sizes you go down depends on where you started and how your body changes after the procedure. Most women lose between 2 and 3 pants sizes after a tuck, but there are patients who lose even more. If you had a lot of loose skin before the procedure, for example, you could go down 4 more pants sizes.Patronella recommends patients take short walks of 10 minutes, gradually increasing this to one mile, twice daily by days 10 to 14 days after the procedure. That's a key reason 99% of RealSelf members who had the procedure say their panniculectomy was “Worth It.” It's easier to lead an active lifestyle after excess skin is removed, so this procedure can lead to additional weight loss.Plastic Surgery Instructions (Panniculectomy):-When showering you can hold your drains, pin them to a belt around your waist, attach them to a lanyard or string around your neck, or a partner/family member can hold them. Do whatever is easiest for you.Panniculectomy is a major surgery that can require weeks or months to fully heal. However, if you're dealing with extra skin after weight loss, surgery can help improve your health and quality of life. You can expect to wear your compression garments for two to six weeks. Your surgeon will advise you in the postoperative period how long. It all depends on your specific surgery and how your recovery is progressing. It's normal to experience some discomfort while wearing compression garments.Although these issues do not relate to your current BMI, your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon may have some specifications in that regard. Most offices require a BMI of less than 40 to even consider a patient a surgical candidate. This relates to overall health, the ability to heal, and complications from anesthesia.A panniculectomy aims to only remove the apron of skin that can develop with significant weight loss. As a result the procedure is faster and safer for many patients. The biggest difference is the goal of the surgical procedure. A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess fat, skin, and tissue, while a panniculectomy is performed to remove a pannus.
