Yes, if you go to a cashier to check out your groceries, the cashier is indeed obligated to bag your groceries.

Why you should bag your own groceries

If you can and don’t bag your own groceries, you deserve a special place in hell. My eyes almost popped out when I read Roz Warren article on how bagging your own grocery is Customer Disservice. Years ago, like any self-sufficient teenager, I did a few months of cashiering work at a high-traffic, upscale supermarket. Granted, our supermarket is not your Costco size but I think the same experience would apply in America.

Yes, if you go to a cashier to check out your groceries, the cashier is indeed obligated to bag your groceries. But just as how job descriptions can change, surely it is not a sin to start bagging your own groceries. In fact, the role of a cashier is to help you to check out. Their job is to make sure that customers pay the correct amount and do not defraud the supermarket. If bagging your own groceries can create a more pleasant shopping experience, why not consider bagging your own purchases if you can?

Bagging your own groceries helps to move the line faster. If everyone bags their own groceries, the time taken to check out decreases dramatically. Some shoppers like to use one plastic bag for every single item. Some shoppers like to use only one plastic bag for all items. Some like to separately bag every single piece of meat pack (even if they are already sealed shut). Even when these products were sitting in the same trolley or basket during your one-hour spree in the supermarket. It would be very useful if every customer who comes to the check-out line had a badge pinned to their chest stating their bagging preference. “Hello, I am Tom and I like my bottle of shampoo to be bagged separately from my tin of Twinning Tea.” But they don’t. So the cashier would try to bag your products separately in a commonsensical way — Raw food, canned food, bread, fragile items like chips, and sushi. We try our best but sometimes you could have made our lives a lot better by arranging the items in the preferred bagging order on the conveyor belt. No one wants to bag up a pack of steak first, then realizing that coming next up from a trolley that seems more like a black hole, we have to figure out how to arrange a jumbled order of 20kg worth of canned food, eggs, bread, interspersed with toxic chemicals like detergent and unbagged vegetables. All while, we try to balance the number of bags you have to carry to your car. Too few bags, you accuse us of damaging your produce. Too many bags, we are killing the planet.

Honestly, bagging your own items can be so much faster. Why leave others to bag when you know best how you want your products to be bagged? And everyone gets to walk out of the supermarket faster — which is a win-win situation in my opinion. Bagging your own products is NOT a customer disservice. Today, most airline crew will decline to place your luggage into the overhead cabin. If you were able to pull your luggage around the airport, you are certainly able-bodied to put it into the cabin.

Is removing job hazards a customer disservice?

Similarly, hauling heavy products into bags is often back-breaking and dangerous, especially so for cashiers who tend to be middle-aged ladies. The cashier first has to bend down — often in a very unnatural, non-ergonomic way, to first haul heavy products into your bag, then into the pick-up area or trolley. If you were able to carry your groceries in a basket in the last hour, you certainly can bag your own groceries. During Covid Pandemic, having the cashier bag your grocery increases unnecessary surface contact between shoppers and cashier. Of course, if you have trouble bagging your own groceries, supermarket staffs are more than happy to do it for you. But it would help our backs greatly if you could bag your own produce. Bagging your own grocery comes with perks. I bring a super big shopping bag to pack my own groceries. Sometimes I bring a sturdy backpack so I can carry easier heavier items like shampoo. The tension of a flimsy plastic bag that weighs 5kg digging deep reddish lines into my sweaty palm versus a well-balanced load on my back, I will take the latter any day. Sometimes the cashier is such a speed genie that before I can flash off my reusable bag, they already started bagging the vegetables into their individual plastic bags. If you are able-bodied and do not need any help bagging your own groceries, try the self-checkout counter. It makes shopping at the supermarket much faster and enjoyable for everyone else.
